Sunday Morning Discussion Topics

The adult class that meets in the sanctuary during Sunday education hour covers a wide range of topics. Recent topics have ranged from "Myths of the Evolution Wars" to "Contemporary American Poetry" to "The Buddhist Nun Pema Chodron" to the question “What is Justice?” All are welcome on any Sunday.

Sunday Morning Bible Study

This group is perhaps Covenant's best kept secret. The class meets at the Meeks House (across Caroline Street from the main church building). A rotating team of teachers leads this group, which offers an opportunity to share more personal reflections, something that is not always possible in larger classes. The class follows the Revised Common Lectionary and is based on the Seasons of the Spirit curriculum. In a typical session the class discusses the historical context of the Scripture, what the original authors might have intended, and moves to sharing the personal message for our lives. As always at Covenant, a variety of perspectives are appreciated.

Parents' Forum

Parents of Covenant gather on the third Sunday of each month the second floor of Meeks House in Laura Mayo's office to discuss topics related to parenting. Parents gather to share the collective wisdom of the group. Sometimes people come to speak on specific topics. Discussions have included discipline, singing with children, helping children and youth deal with grief, getting ready for school, how to talk about God, dealing with family, gifts, food at the holidays, and cultural identity.

Inquirer's Classes

For visitors who'd like to learn more about Covenant and for those considering membership, Covenant holds a series of Inquirers' classes two or three times each year during the education hour. Each series of seven classes covers such topics as liberal Christianity, Baptist history and principles, and the history and structure of Covenant Church.

Theology Book Group

This group meets on the third Sunday of the month from 6:00 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. in the church library. To date, works by philosophers of religion and law, feminist theologians, and those working at the intersection of religion and science have been read. To learn more, please visit our blog at http://thirdsundaytheology.wordpress.com.

Literary Book Group

This group meets every four to eight weeks to discuss a work of fiction or non-fiction. This group reads everything from bestsellers to classics, with an occasional biography or historical treatise thrown in for good measure. Our past selections have included Pulitzer Prize, National Book Award, and Man Booker Prize winners. The group reads whatever they choose, so everyone has a chance to shape the reading selections in the future. All are welcome to join! The group meets at 5:00 in the evening on a designated Sunday each month.

Yoga

Here's a chance to bring peace to your body and mind through some stretching, breathing exercises, and a few minutes of meditation. All of this is in the company of friendly people, and under the guidance of Bill Davis. Whether you have done yoga before or not, join us on Tuesdays at 6:30 p.m. in the narthex. Bring a friend if you like. Wear comfortable clothes, and bring a mat if you have one. The recommended fee of $10 per session is given to Covenant Church.

Art as Prayer

No art skills are necessary, just a desire to give expression to your spirit through guided activities using a variety of art materials. Do you long to tell a story or make a symbol of a moment that speaks to you? Everyone is encouraged and welcome. Art as Prayer meets six or seven Saturdays each year beginning at 9 a.m. and concluding about 12:30 p.m.

Labyrinth

Covenant Church's distinctive outdoor labyrinth invites anyone to a brief sojourn in walking meditation as a way of slowing down and becoming centered. In addition, there are group labyrinth walks scheduled throughout the year, often at the spring and fall equinoxes.

Church Library

Covenant's lending library contains books on Biblical studies, theology, spirituality, psychology, worship, church history, social issues, and environmental concerns, as well as literature. Church members and active participants in the congregation can check out books for a month. The library is located just a couple doors down the hall from the church narthex.

Our Philosophy of Education

The aim of Covenant's adult education programming is to enable participants to articulate the ways the divine is operative in their own lives by drawing upon scripture, tradition, reason, conversation, study, and experience.

Covenant's adult education programming reflects two statements by Jerome Bruner, an educational theorist:
  1. People can be trusted to learn what they need to, at the time they need it, in the manner best suited to their learning styles.
  2. Discovery favors a well-prepared mind.
Therefore, by offering variety and choice in our programming, we hope to allow people to learn what they need when they need it. By offering structure, we hope to prepare minds for discovery. This ranges, for example, from book groups, to small-group Bible discussion, to speaker presentations on timely topics. Through these avenues, we aim to bind together the academic and the practical. We seek to cultivate in participants a growth in learning, enabling them to better pay attention to God and to everything else in God's world, while responding to both.
