Covenant Church : an ecumenical liberal baptist congregation in Houston, Texas
Covenant Church's Baptist congregation is a group of inquirers, drawing on the sacred stories of the Christian tradition, the contemporary word, and its own experiences.



Jeremy Rutledge Jeremy Rutledge has been minister at Covenant Church since January 2002. He is a graduate of Baylor University (B.A.), Baptist Theological Seminary at Richmond (M.Div.), and Meadville/Lombard Theological School (D.Min.). His theological interests include the intersection of religion and literature, the American schools of pragmatism and religious naturalism, and the spirituality and practice of contemplative Christianity and Soto Zen Buddhism. Jeremy completed his clinical pastoral education (CPE) training in Houston, and his first years in ministry were spent as a professional chaplain. He has done additional study at Wadham College, Oxford, Vancouver School of Theology, and among Thich Nhat Hanh's community of engaged Buddhists. Jeremy is a product of Hawai'i, and his partner, Sara, heralds from Colorado. Together they enjoy reading, travel, hiking, and gardening. Laura Mayo Laura Mayo became the first associate minister of Covenant Church in August 2006. Laura is a graduate of Carson-Newman College in Jefferson City, Tennessee and Wake Forest University Divinity School in Winston-Salem, North Carolina. She completed a year-long CPE chaplaincy program at Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center. Laura has also studied at Regent's Park College of Oxford University. Laura is on the Board of the Alliance of Baptists. Laura and her partner, Nicholas Stepp have a son, Owen, who brings them such joy. Laura, Nick, and Owen enjoy travel (now exploring Texas), projects, time with their two cats, and being outside.

Fran Avera Fran Avera has been Minister of Music at Covenant since October 1969. She is a graduate of Westminster Choir College in Princeton, New Jersey (now affiliated with Rider University), with the degrees, Bachelor of Music and Master of Music. She was ordained to the ministry by Covenant in November, 1980.

Before coming to Covenant, Fran served as Minister of Music at University Baptist Church in Austin for 10 years. She has been active as a singer, primarily in recitals and oratorio. She is a voice teacher and served as choral director and voice teacher at St. Agnes Academy in Houston (Dominican Sisters) from 1967- 1997.

Carl McAliley Carl McAliley has been organist at Covenant since February 1999. He studied organ with Miraiam Clapp Duncan, Lawrence University; David Lowry, Winthrop College; Arsene Muzerelle, Conservatoire de Reims; and Louis Robilliard. He holds a BA degree in French and History from Winthrop College. From 1986 to 1991, he worked at Andover Organ Company in Lawrence, Massachusetts, restoring, rebuilding and maintaining historic American organs.

Margie Latham Margie Latham joined our staff as Minister of Administration in January of 2011. She has been a member of Covenant since 1995. Margie was ordained in 1994 by First Baptist Church (ABC) of Ithaca, NY, where she served as the church's intentional interim minister. She has served as interim minister at University Baptist Church (ABC) of Columbus, Ohio and St. Peter United Church of Christ (UCC) of Houston, Texas. She is a graduate of Perkins School of Theology, SMU in Dallas (M.Div. and D.Min.) and of the University of California, Davis (B.S. and M.S., Geology).
