This week’s lectionary text comes at an interesting time. As we prepare for a ministerial transition, we are given an account of strange spirits and the need for discernment. I am particularly drawn to the following line: "While it was still very dark, [Jesus] got up and went out to a deserted place, and there he prayed." This Sunday seems an appropriate time to consider the convergence of contemplation and action. How do we root ourselves in order to meet the changes of the moment? Text: Mark 1:29-39 Jeremy Rutledge

Music
|
At the 8:30 a.m. service we will hear another of "The Songs of Travel" by Ralph Vaughan Williams. Although this music is a song cycle – in other words it was written to be sung, the song has been arranged for cello and piano. Susan Wegner and Carl McAliley will play "Whither Must I Wander." Randall Thompson, an American composer, is best known for his choral writing. His anthem, "The Best of Rooms," will be sung by the choir at the 11:00 a.m. worship service. The text is from a poem by Robert Herrick, "Christ’s Part," written in 1647: Christ, He requires still, Wheresoe’er He comes To feed, or lodge, To have the best of rooms: Give him the choice; Grant Him the nobler part Of all the house: The best of all’s the heart. Education

Children and Youth Education Preschool: We are using the Preschool Seasons of the Spirit to help us learn stories from the Bible, sing songs, and create crafts. We meet in the room inside the nursery.Kindergarten - 5th Grade: We are using the Seasons of the Spirit curriculum, music, and art projects to examine the stories of the Bible through the lectionary. We will begin our time together in the library with choir and story time and then our class will divide for additional activities (depending on the number of children present). Youth Education: Meets on the 3rd floor of the Meeks House. 1st Sunday is Mentor/Youth Sunday School; 2nd Sunday is Bible Study; 3rd Sunday is Check-in and Jam Session (bring your instruments); 4th Sunday is Practice (time to learn about and practice things like yoga, poetry, art as prayer, labyrinth, meditation). Adult Education “Self-Care” led by Brandy Mullins. (in the Sanctuary): In today’s busy world, tending to our personal well-being can be a challenge. However, self-care is a vital foundation for living whole and healthy lives. We will explore methods of self-care and ways to fit them into daily life. Brandy has served as a hospital chaplain and a parish minister. She has an M.Div. and a B.S. (microbiology). Bible Study and Discussion (in Meeks House parlor): Margie Latham will lead a discussion of Mark 1:29-39. Jesus begins his ministry in Galilee: healing the sick, casting out demons, proclaiming the message, and taking time out to pray. What do you think is the message Jesus is proclaiming? Come share your ideas.
