Sermon
This week we’ll revisit one of the most well-known stories that Rabbi Jesus ever told. The parable of the prodigal son is one that many of us learned as children and have heard told and retold countless times. It’s enough to make us wonder about the chances of hearing anything new as we listen to the story once more.
Last fall I had a conversation that highlighted something I had never seen or heard in this parable. It is, in some ways, a minor detail, a marginal note. Yet the more I consider it, the greater it seems. I don’t know that I’ll ever read this parable in the same way. More importantly, I don’t know that I’ll ever look at life the same way. Here’s hoping.
Text: Luke 15.11-32

Music
At the early service, Susan Wegner, accompanied by Carl McAliley, will play a piece for cello, “Song of the Birds,” by Pablo Casals (1876-1973). Casals was taught piano, violin and organ by his father. At the age of 11, he first heard a cello, and determined that it would be his instrument. His mother enrolled him in a music school in Barcelona where he made rapid progress. He gave his first solo recital at the age of 14.

The choir will sing a beautiful anthem by Johannes Brahms (1833-1897), “Let Nothing Ever Grieve Thee.” The English words translated by Walter Buszin are:

Let nothing ever grieve thee, distress thee, nor fret thee;                    heed God’s good will, my soul, be still, compose thee.
Why brood all day in sorrow? Tomorrow will bring thee                    God’s help benign and grace sublime in mercy.
Be true in all endeavor and ever ply bravely, what God                    decrees brings joy and peace, He’ll stay thee. Amen.

Education
Children & Youth Education:
Pre-K - 2nd Grade - We are studying stories from the Bible through creative activities and crafts using the Seasons of the Spirit curriculum. This class will meet in the Classroom (to the right of the Workroom).
3rd Grade - 5th Grade - We are using the Seasons of the Spirit curriculum, music, and art projects to examine the stories of the Bible through the lectionary. This class will meet in the Library (to the left of the Workroom).
Youth - We are continuing a study of Jesus using Jesus and His Kingdom of Equals. This book uses Biblical scholarship and information from the Jesus Seminar to create portraits of Jesus. We will become more familiar with Jesus’s context in history as well as his Jewish identity.

Adult Education:
Bible Discussion - Study and discussion of one of Sunday’s lectionary passages from the Bible. Focus scripture: Luke 15:1-3, 11b-32.
In the Sanctuary - “Labyrinth: Symbol and Spiritual Practice.” Christians have sometimes been told to follow the “straight and narrow path.” So how did a twisting, winding labyrinth ever become a Christian symbol? In this class, Bruce Yaeger will explain how Christian theology adapted and transformed an ancient non-Christian symbol into a meditative practice.
Parents Forum - Parents Forum meets every 3rd Sunday during Education Hour in Laura’s office in Meeks House.
