Welcome to
Covenant Church
Our Story
A beacon of progress and hope in Houston for over 60 years.
Our congregation thrives on collaboration, with members actively participating in the programs that make Covenant special. This involvement allows our ministers to focus on thoughtful sermons, community outreach, and engaging with the broader Houston community. Together, we support over a dozen social service initiatives, including the Christian Community Service Center, Omega House, Hospitality Apartments, and Project Row Houses.
At Covenant, worship is more than a service—it’s a celebration of creativity and connection. Our services blend contemporary poetry, dance, drama, and exceptional choral and instrumental music with our spiritual traditions. On our grounds, you’ll find a peaceful labyrinth, inviting members and visitors alike to embark on a reflective walk or join in collaborative services that bridge our church with the larger community.
Our History
Covenant Church was born in 1965, inspired by the transformative movements of church renewal and civil rights. A group of 60 individuals, united by a shared commitment to progressive theology and social justice, came together to create a new kind of church—one rooted in Baptist principles yet open to renewal and change.
Individual
Freedom
to interpret scripture and live authentically.
Congregational Autonomy
that ensures our community makes its own decisions.
Intentional
Worship
that incorporates liturgy, music, art, and personal experiences.
Respect for
All People
transcending labels and divisions.
From the beginning, we envisioned a community that bridges the sacred and the secular, celebrates diverse traditions, and remains unwavering in its mission for social justice. As the Southern Baptist Convention diverged from these values, Covenant chose a new path, honoring Baptist principles while standing true to our vision.
For 35 years, we shared worship spaces with other congregations, embodying our commitment to resourcefulness and collaboration. In 2000, we established our home in Houston’s Midtown/Museum District—a welcoming space designed to inspire reflection, foster the arts, and serve the community.
Covenant is affiliated with The Alliance of Baptists and The American Baptist Churches, USA.
We are a partner congregation with The Association of Welcoming and Affirming Baptists, The Baptist Peace Fellowship of North America, and The Center for Progressive Christianity.
