Proclamation:

This Sunday as we begin our Stewardship drive, we will focus on the theme of Welcome Table. We will consider Jesus as one who welcomes all to an ever expanding table. We will consider the welcome we extend as Covenant Church.

The lovely song, “Simple Gifts” is included in Set I of Old American Songs by Aaron Copland (1900-1990), whose music may reflect the American character more than that of any other composer. His incorporation of indigenous melodies from all parts of the country is largely responsible for this. He describes “Simple Gifts” as “a favorite song of the Shaker sect, from the period 1837-1847. The melody and words were quoted by Edward D. Andrews in his book of Shaker rituals, songs and dances, entitled The Gift To Be Simple.” A soloist will sing at the 8:30 service.

The choir, at the 11:00 worship will sing “Christ in the Stranger’s Guise,” an old English rune of hospitality set by Alfred Burt. In addition, in keeping with the theme, "Welcome Table", the anthem, “Invitation” by Margaret Tucker (better known to us as Maggi) will also be heard. Both pieces will be heard again at the close of what we are sure will be a successful stewardship emphasis on October 25.
